Chapter Eleven

IN SPITE OF being wired from the drive, that midnight visit to paradise had Sam sleeping like a baby. Amazing what an orgasm could do for a guy.

The next morning, he was shaved, showered, and ready to face the day, feeling better than he had in months. Like he had hope again, he realized. Hope for the future. Hope that he could find justice for his boy. And a chance to fill his soul with something other than grief.

Dressed in the clean clothes he’d brought with him, he strolled down the hall, the smell of bacon leading him to the kitchen. There, he spied Amy at the stove, poking her flipper around a frying pan. His stomach rumbled. He hadn’t looked forward to food in…forever. A couple of days in Amy’s company had changed all that. She’d probably have him back up to his fighting weight by the end of the week. She gave him a friendly smile when she saw him, and returned her attention to the pan.

“Where’s Renee?”

“Outside. Collecting pinecones for her next science project.”

She pointed out the one unbroken window into the backyard. Sam stood beside Amy, observing her daughter. The girl stooped to pick up a cone, her mouth in constant motion. Maybe she was talking to herself, or maybe she was singing along with an iPod like Tommy used to. Whatever the case, he was glad Renee was out of the house for the moment. He had some unsettled business with her mother. Business that he planned on taking back to his room.

He shifted to stand behind Amy and planted a kiss on the side of her neck, ready to whisper sweet nothings in her ear. She bolted away from him, the flipper in her hand poised as if to attack.

“What do you think you’re doing?”

Sam held his arms out from his body like a felon, showing he had no weapons. “Kissing you. Is that a problem?”

“I wasn’t expecting it.”

He smiled and leaned against the counter. “Well, you should. After last night.”

“Last night was a onetime deal.”

He shook his head, certain he’d heard her wrong. “Are you saying—”

“It’s not like we’re dating, Mr. Hutchinson.” She waved the spatula at a chair. “Now, sit down. Let me get you that breakfast I promised.”

As she passed in front of him, he grasped her by the waist and spun her around to face him. She arched her back, pulling her upper body as far away from him as she could.

“What’s the matter?”

“Nothing. Everything’s good.”

“Sorry, lady, but I’m not keen on this hot and cold routine. You came to my room last night.” He lowered his voice, in case Renee was in earshot. “You had sex with me.”

“Not according to Bill Clinton.”

That line left him humming and hawing. “I was going by my definition. I haven’t been with that many women to be so casual about it. And what you did to me was amazing.”

She looked puzzled for a second, then the light bulb flickered on. “And you want me to do it again?”

“Well, sure.
